Frequently Asked Questions about Discoid Roaches

  • Will Discoid Roaches infest my home?

No. Discoid roaches cannot adapt to the conditions found in most homes. They have difficulty climbing smooth surfaces so they cannot climb walls or move from room to room inside a house easily. The high humidity needed for breeding is rarely found indoors and most homes also do not have temperatures above 86 degrees Fahrenheit which is also necessary for effective breeding by this species of roach. For these reason, it is very unlike that a discoid roach would, or even could, infest your home.

  • Discoid vs Dubia, what is the difference?

There are very minor differences between Dubia roaches and Discoid roaches. The main difference is that Discoid are legal in Florida and Dubia are not. Discoid are also a good choice for people that have developed a Dubia roach allergy. The cost difference comes down strictly to availably rather than one being “better” than the other. Dubia have a far greater availability so they are a much cheaper option, though we are trying hard to close that gap.

  • What size of Discoid Roach should I get?

As a loose guideline you can use the space between the eyes of your critter to choose the right size of feeder roach. Discoid roaches are soft bodied which makes them less of a choking hard than an improperly sized cricket.

Extra Small 1/4″ – Work well for most newborn bug munchers. Slings and Mantids that have outgrown fruit flies can also take down XS Discoid.

Smalls 1/4″ to 1/2″ – Work well for most young/baby bug munchers. Smalls are also a good choice for juvenile/young adult geckoes.

Medium 1/2″ to 3/4″ – Work well for most Juvenile bug munchers. Adult geckoes prefer medium or smaller roaches in our experience.

Large 3/4″ to 1″ – Work well for most adult bug munchers. Juvenile and young monitors enjoy this size as well.

  • What do I feed my Discoid Roaches?

We send you a package of roach chow with your order that should keep your roaches fed for a while but you will need to provide a moisture source. Fruit and veggie scraps should be sufficient. Remove any moist food after 24 hours to prevent pests such as gnats.

  • What do I keep Discoid Roaches in?

Any smooth sided container taller than 6 inches will work. Simply place a couple egg crates or a bunch of empty roll cardboard tubes into your bin. Make sure there is at least 4 inches from the top of your cardboard and the top of your container to prevent your discoid from escaping. You do not need a lid when using a proper container.

  • Can Discoid Roaches fly?

No. Discoid roaches cannot produce the lift necessary to take flight but they can flutter as they fall to the ground.

  • Do Discoid Roaches Bite?

Discoid can bite but it feels like a dull nibble rather than a bite. The risk comes from their spiked rear legs which adult discoids use as a spear. We only sell Large and under which is small enough that the barbs are not of concern.

  • Do you offer DOA protection?

Yes. We add extra roaches to every order to cover a small number of incidental die offs that can happen during shipping. If you experience a DOA situation email [email protected] with your order number and any pictures of video of the roaches within 8 hours of delivery.

  • When will my Discoid Roaches arrive?

You should expect your order to arrive  in 1 – 4 days. Your tracking information will provide an expected delivery date.
